Shedding Pounds with Ayurveda: Natural Weight Loss Guide

Do you struggle to lose weight? Ayurveda is an ancient medical system that uses techniques from centuries ago to target stubborn fat that resists exercise by stimulating your digestive fire. Ayurveda is unique in its personal approach. Diet, exercise, and weight loss regimens are not the same for everyone.

Ayurveda, the science of healing, dates back to around 5000 BC. Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems in the world. It has gained popularity worldwide. Let’s take a look at some Ayurveda dietary practices to see how effective they are in weight loss.

Obesity is a major concern during the Covid-19 Pandemic, as it increases the complications. The main cause of death has always been obesity. Many people spend lots of money on organic food, go to the gym and eat supplements in order to lose weight.

They are too busy to do it regularly. It may work well for you to lose weight, but the side effects can be very harmful. Ayurveda, the science behind a balanced diet, is a routine that combines discipline and diet. It will not harm your body, but will instead sync up your mind, your body, and your soul.

What Are the Common Causes of Obesity

  • Genetics. If both parents are overweight, a person is more likely to develop obesity. Genetics can also influence hormones that regulate fat.
  • Physical inactivity. Inactive people consume fewer calories than active people.
  • Overeating. High-energy foods are those high in sugar or fat, such as fast food, sweets, and fried food.
  • Carbohydrates. Experts say that simple carbohydrates such as sugar, fructose and desserts, soft drinks beer, wine, etc. are the culprits. They cause weight gain because they are absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream compared to complex carbohydrates such as pasta, grains, rice, vegetables, fruits and raw fruit. This causes a greater insulin release following meals compared to complex carbohydrates.
  • Regularity in eating. Many overweight people eat less than those with normal weight. Scientists found that those who eat four to five small meals daily had lower cholesterol levels and stable blood sugar levels than those who ate less often.
  • Emotional factors. Emotional factors. Some people tend eat more when they are feeling bored, sad, stressed or angry. Most overweight people do not have more psychological problems than people of normal weight, but about 30% have trouble with binge eating.
  • Obesity is also caused by diseases such as insulin resistance, hypothyroidism and polycystic Ovaries Syndrome.

Eat According to Your Dosha

Ayurvedic philosophy teaches that humans need to balance out three types of energy. Each is related to natural elements.

Vata

It is the force that energizes the mind and body and governs the nervous system. Vata, when in balance is energetic and lively. When the Vata is out of balance, one can experience dry skin, coughing, and dry hair.

Ayurvedic Diet:

  • Every 2 hours, eat 3 to 4 small meals.
  • Include lots of vegetables cooked in your diet.
  • Avoid dark shade vegetables like eggplants, peppers, tomatoes etc.
  • Consume juicy, sweet fruits. Avoid astringent fruit like cranberries or raw apples.
  • Limit legumes.
  • Include nuts and seeds in a variety, preferably as milks.
  • Avoid products that are addictive, such as alcohol, tobacco and sugar.
  • Avoid eating raw, frozen, or cold foods.

Pitta

Pitta represents the element of fire. Pitta dominant individuals tend to be strong-willed and determined, with leadership qualities. Pitta imbalance can cause anger, agitation, and even burning disorders like ulcers and inflammation.

Ayurvedic Diet:

  • Include raw vegetables and salads as part of your daily diet.
  • Moderation is the key to eating meat, seafood, and eggs.
  • Avoid coffee, alcohol, and spicy foods.
  • Avoid nuts and seeds.
  • Limit your consumption of legumes.
  • Include sweetened dairy products.

Dosha Kapha

Maintains body resistance. Kapha dominant individuals are calm, steady, and thoughtful. Regular exercise, stimulating activities, and extra fluid intake can help maintain balance. Earth and water are associated with the energy of your body structure.

According to Ayurvedic traditions, your diet should be based on your dosha.

Ayurvedic Diet:

  • Reduce the amount of food that you consume.
  • Avoid dairy products and foods that are high in fat.
  • Limit protein.
  • Consume lots of vegetables and leafy greens that are grown aboveground.
  • Astringent fruits such as apples, cranberries and mangoes are good for you.
  • Limit your intake of nuts and seeds, as well as animal products.

Diet Right

Your dosha determines right diet for you:

The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet was inspired by foods that our caveman ancestors consumed in the Paleolithic period. Paleo diet experts say it will help you to lose weight and boost your immunity. In general, this diet involves eating healthy fats such as olive oil, meat, fish, vegetables, nuts, fruits, and eggs in moderation. Avoid grains, legumes and dairy products, potatoes, processed foods, vegetable oil, and salt.

The Ayurveda View

  • Pittas would probably do better on the Paleo diet because their strong digestive system could handle meat better.
  • Individuals with a vata dominant intestine have a more delicate digestive system, and would therefore have difficulty.

The Kaphas type does not need as much protein or fat as other types but it thrives with a lot of vegetables.

The Keto Diet

The Keto diet is low-carb and high-fat. It shares many similarities with other low-carb diets, such as the Atkins, Paleo, or Atkins. Experts say that by reducing your carbohydrate consumption and increasing your fat intake, you can enter a metabolic condition called ketosis, which will help your body become a fat-burning device. Keto-eating people prefer low carb foods such as meat, fish and eggs, vegetables, and natural fats, like butter and olive oil. Also, they avoid starch and sugary products such as bread, pastas, sweets, potatoes, sodas, juices, and rice.

The Ayurvedic View

  • The ketogenic diet is a good choice for those with a vata dominant body type.
  • Individuals of Pitta dosha are also acceptable.
  • It would be very hard on a Kapha. Kaphas are the slowest in metabolism, and their constitutions were not meant to be fat-laden.

Fasting is a part of the keto diet, and it may not suit all body types. You eat a light meal early in the evening and then fast for 12-14 hrs. Your body will then enter ketosis, a metabolic state where your body starts to burn fat for energy, and your glucose reserves are depleted. Pittas who have a fast metabolism may not benefit from this type of fasting.

The Vegan Diet

Vegans avoid animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, and legumes and eat whole grains, legumes and fruits and vegetables.

The Ayurvedic View

  • Ayurveda considers dairy to be Sattvic. Vegans, however, avoid it completely. Daily diet includes ghee (clarified butter), milk, paneer, and lassi.

Vata types do not respond well to cold foods or raw food. Pitta and Kapha people could.

Intermittent Fasting

The pattern of intermittent fasting involves eating and fasting for a set period of time.

Ayurvedic View

  • Vata people will not feel good if they go more than 12 hour without eating. Vata is prone to low blood sugar when they do not eat enough. Vata people are very active and need a breakfast that is packed with nutrients.
  • Pitta dosha people tend to be very hungry. You’ll be fine with a 12 hour fast, and you might be able get to 14 or even 16 hours. But be careful if you become too strict about what you eat.
  • Kaphas are known to hang on to almost everything. Kaphas are easily affected by memories, resentments from the past and calories. This is why kaphas do not need to eat nearly as much as Vata or Pitta, even though their sweet tooth may be extreme.

Ayurveda on the other side still advises that you eat balanced meals , and to not overdo it. Overeating clogs our body tissues. Stomach, liver, and intestines are overloaded with food, resulting in low energy levels and brain fog. You basically undo the benefits of fasting intermittently! If you find it difficult to control your appetite during an extended fast, try a shorter time period.

Include all six flavors in your diet. Ayurveda identifies six tastes: sweet, sour and salty. Include all six tastes in your daily diet. The anabolic (building) nature of sweet, salty, and sour tastes requires the catabolic (burning) nature of pungent, bitter, and astringent flavors to balance them. Too many sweet, salty and sour tastes can lead to rapid weight gain. Bitter foods, like leafy vegetables – spinach, Kale, etc. Ginger, spicy peppers, and astringent foods like cranberries and pears are all healthy alternatives to sweet, salty, and sour tastes.

Guggulu: The Millennium’s Magical Herb

Medical Scientists, researchers, and doctors from all over the globe are interested in Guggulu or Commiphora Mukul. Guggulu has been a traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

Guggulu means in Sanskrit “One who protects us against Disease”. Guggulu trees are 1.5-2 meters tall, and grow in India’s wild, dry areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Bengal, as well as in parts of Arabia and Africa. Traditional medicine uses the gum that oozes out of the tree’s bark (especially during summer).

In Ayurveda, five different types (or species) of Guggulu are described. The gum that is golden yellow is the most potent. The Guggulu is a soft gum that burns with a sweet scent and is soluble in both water and fire. Freshly collected Guggulu has different medicinal properties from its older counterpart.

Guggulu is a versatile herb that can be used alone or with other herbs. Guggulu gum contains active ingredients like Z-guggulsterone and guggulipid. Guggulu is beneficial in a variety of conditions.

  • Guggulu and its active component guggulsterone 1
  • Effects of Guggulu Extract on Pain Response in Osteoarthritis Subjects 2

Ayurvedic Description of Guggulu

Guggulu has a bitter, pungent and sweet taste. It is also astringent, astringent, and sour. The potency of the herb is hot, but it’s light and delicious. Guggulu has a Tridoshahara effect, meaning it affects all three doshas (Vata Pitta and Kapha). Both topically and internally, it can be used.

Guggulu gum is traditionally used to clean wounds and skin ulcers. It can also be applied on hemorrhoids, abscesses, etc. It may reduce swelling and foul smells (pus). Traditional uses include external applications for rheumatoid osteoarthritis and fractured bone. The vapors of Guggulu can also be used to disinfect and deodorize. Guggulu gum is used in traditional gargling for pyorrhea, dental problems, and other maladies.

The Potential Therapeutic Benefits Of Guggulu

Guggulu: Guggulu has been used for centuries to support musculoskeletal structure and function. Studies indicate that Guggulu is a powerful anti-inflammatory and can reduce arthritic pain and swelling. There is evidence that Guggulu has antioxidant and chondroprotective properties and may rejuvenate cartilage. Guggulu’s unctuous properties make it an ideal binder for tablets and pills. It is used in hundreds of formulations with other ingredients and herbs. Guggulu can also increase the bioavailability of other herbs, making the combination more potent.

Osteoporosis: Guggulu has been traditionally used to support joint structure and function. It can be used both externally and internally to strengthen, repair and rejuvenate bones. Tradition has it that it promotes bone mineralization, growth, and healing.

Hyperlipidemia: Guggulu has been praised for its fat-burning properties in Ayurveda. The resin (Z – guggulsterone), is said to increase the metabolism of fats and bile acid. According to studies, it can reduce LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) while increasing HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). Also, it is known to maintain healthy arteries. Guggulu, in Ayurvedic terms, is called ” Medopachak“, which means “one who digests fat (lipid)”. This therapeutic effect has been confirmed by modern science through scientific research.

Thyroid disorders: Gum Guggulu is also believed to help maintain a healthy thyroid gland. According to research, Guggulu is able to protect thyroid hormone-secreting cells against oxidative stress and autoimmunity. It can improve the thyroid gland’s function and be useful in thyroid disorders.

Obesity: Guggulu has been recommended as a traditional remedy to maintain a healthy weight. It increases the catabolism and excretion of lipids.

Circulatory System: Guggulu has been traditionally used to increase blood flow to organs. Studies have shown that Guggulu may be useful in dissolving clots.

Kidney Stones: Guggulu has been used for centuries to support the structure of the kidneys. Clinical trials indicate that Guggulu when combined with other herbs such as Gokhura and Punarnava(Boerhavia diflusa), may dissolve and break down kidney stones.

Skin Health: Guggulu has been used for centuries to promote healthy skin.

Gynecological Disorders: Clinical studies indicate that Guggulu can benefit many gynecological conditions like Dysmenorrhea and Leucorrhea. Fresh Guggulu can also be used to boost sperm counts and as an Aphrodisiac.

Rejuvenation: Fresh Guggulu is a member of the rasayana group, which includes ayurvedic herbs revered for rejuvenating properties. It can act on all tissues and improve their metabolism.

Guggulu is the protector, according to Ayurveda, because of its many properties. Guggulu, being herbal in nature, is safe to consume within therapeutic doses. Guggulu must be purified by Ayurveda’s specific method if it is going to be used for medicine.

It is not surprising that Guggulu will be hailed as the “Magical Herb of the Millennium”.
