What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo, also known as leucoderma, is a condition characterized by loss of normal pigmentation of the skin. It appears as de-pigmented or white patches on various parts of body. It has a slow progression, and often appears symmetrically on both sides of the body (on both the legs, hands, etc). In rare cases, one finds vitiligo spreading all over the body. Vitiligo is more a social than a medical condition, especially amongst dark skinned people. In the US, about 1 to 2% of the population suffers from vitiligo.

How is it Caused?

Although the exact cause of vitiligo is not known, it is commonly associated with the body's destruction of pigmented cells (melanocytes), when it fails to recognize them as its own (autoimmunity). Some predisposing factors that have been identified include:
