Causes

In humans, return of venous blood from the lower limb to the heart requires a pump equipped with non-return valves. The pumping action is provided by the muscles. Their tone and contractions, acting within the strict confines of the encircling deep fascia, squeeze blood towards the heart. Therefore, muscle weakness and wasting, or deep fascia stretching, will impair the function of the valve. On standing, the whole weight of the column of blood from the legs to the heart is exerted on the valves. When these valves become incompetent, there is a high, intermittent pressure leakage of blood into the superficial veins. The superficial veins are partially protected, and hence varicosity mainly affects the intercommunicating network of veins.
