Physiology of Ejaculation

Ejaculation is a process controlled by the central nervous system, i.e. the spinal cord and brain. When the sexual organs are stimulated, the nerve impulses carry the message from the organ to the spinal cord and into the brain. The central nervous system signals the body to ejaculate through the motor nerves. The process of ejaculation occurs in two phases:

Phase I: Emission

The prostate gland in males is located near the urethra. So, when the brain signals contraction, it releases fluid along with the contents of the seminal vesicle, into the urethra. This fluid is called semen. Ejaculation is unstoppable at this stage.

Phase II: Ejaculation

The muscles at the base of the penis contract, forcing semen out of the penis (ejaculation and orgasm) while the bladder neck contracts (so that urine does not come out).
