What is Nocturnal Enuresis?

Nocturnal Enuresis, also known as bed-wetting, is a condition characterized by involuntary loss of urine especially in the night, while sleeping. It is common for toddlers to wet their bed, as they have not yet learned to control the flow of urine effectively. However, this becomes a problem when it affects older children. This condition occurs more commonly in young children, about the age of 5. In the US, about 5 to 7 million children wet their beds. Bed-wetting is more commonly seen among boys. It is important to understand that this is not an illness, but a condition that can be treated effectively, with permanent results.

Nocturnal Enuresis is of two types:

. Primary Nocturnal Enuresis: This is termed so, when the child has never developed complete night-time bladder control.

. Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis: This term is used when the child has accidental bed-wetting after having had bladder control for 6 months or more.

Causes

The exact cause of nocturnal enuresis is not known. Some factors that have been identified to increase the risk are:

. Family history of nocturnal enuresis

. Abnormalities in the urinary tract or spinal cord

Diagnosis

The medical history, symptoms and a physical examination are usually sufficient to diagnose the condition. However, in some cases certain diagnostic tests such as X-rays or other imaging studies of the kidneys or bladder may be required.
