Causes

Gall stones are classified into cholesterol and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are the most common type encountered in developed countries, whereas pigment stones are found more frequently in developing countries.

Factors leading to Cholesterol Stones are:

Symptoms

Asymtomatic gall stones are usually detected on X-rays, during surgeries or at autopsy.

Symptomatic gall stones manifest either as pain in the abdomen or inflammation of the gall bladder.

Pain occurs when the stone gets impacted in the duct. Pain is of sudden onset and is sustained for about an hour -- its continuation for more than 6 hours suggests that a complication such as cholecystitis or pancreatitis has developed.
